What you are actually buying when you buy QS time
For most subcontractors and small main contractors, the QS invoice covers a familiar bundle: take-offs measured from the drawings, a bill of quantities assembled to NRM2, rates applied, and the tender documents brought to a standard a main contractor's commercial team will take seriously. It is skilled work — and it is also, overwhelmingly, measurement and document production rather than judgement. One contractor we work with paid £1,200+VAT for exactly that bundle on a single tender, and the bid lost. The fee was owed regardless.
That is the structural problem with per-tender QS fees: the cost scales with how often you bid, so the fee itself becomes a reason to bid less — which is backwards for a firm trying to grow.

What Nexley honestly does not do
A good QS is also a commercial adviser: interpreting JCT and NEC terms, valuing loss and expense, fighting an extension of time claim, standing behind a final account negotiation with professional weight. Nexley does none of that, and a page that claimed otherwise would deserve your distrust. If your work involves regular contractual disputes or complex claims, you will still want a professional on call — you will simply stop paying professional rates for measurement. What Nexley gives that arrangement is better raw material: measured quantities, approved variations and a clean paper trail, which is what your QS would have asked you for anyway.
