Buildertrend for UK builders: fit and alternatives

Buildertrend can work for a UK builder running high-end domestic projects with a client portal, selections and change orders, but it was built for the US market. Pricing is quote-only, the form asks for turnover in US dollars, and its pages say nothing about VAT, CIS or the domestic reverse charge. Check those in the demo, or compare Tradify, Fergus or an AI back office.

What is Buildertrend good at?

Buildertrend is strongest on the client side of a big residential job. Its pricing page lists scheduling, daily logs, tasks, a time clock, change orders, selections, a subcontractor portal, warranties, lead management, proposals, a client portal, bids, purchase orders, budgets, estimates, invoices and takeoff, with unlimited users and unlimited projects on every plan.

If you build extensions and whole-house refurbishments for clients who want to see progress photos, pick their tiles in an app and sign off variations as they go, that's the problem Buildertrend was designed for. Its own FAQ says it has been around since 2006 and has users in more than 80 countries.

Where does Buildertrend fit a UK builder badly?

The gaps are tax and money. Buildertrend's FAQ and pricing pages don't mention VAT, the Construction Industry Scheme or the domestic reverse charge. Its demo form asks for annual construction volume "in USD", and its integrated payments are marked US only. Its blog guide on construction taxes talks about sales tax and Social Security, which tells you who it was written for.

None of that rules it out. If Xero handles your VAT and CIS and Buildertrend only runs the project, it can work. But you need to see it working with a UK invoice before you sign.

UK questions to ask in a Buildertrend demo

How much does Buildertrend cost in the UK?

Buildertrend doesn't publish its prices. Its pricing page says pricing is tailored to job volume, team size and scope of work, and you get a figure after a form and a call. So we can't give you a number, and nor should anyone else without a quote in hand.

What you can do is compare the quote against the alternatives below on the same basis: total cost for a year, for your number of users, including onboarding.

What are the alternatives for a UK builder?

Three kinds of tool solve overlapping parts of the problem. Job management software built for trades (Tradify, Fergus) handles quotes, jobs, timesheets and invoices with UK pricing. Accounting software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage) handles VAT and CIS. An AI back office handles the admin across both.

Prices and terms from each vendor's own pricing page, October 2026, excluding VAT. Fergus was running a 90% introductory discount at the time; the list prices are shown.

Tradify suits a firm of two to ten on smaller domestic jobs that wants quotes, scheduling and invoices in one app, with Xero, Sage or QuickBooks sync. Its Pro plan adds quote options with online acceptance and progress invoicing.

Fergus suits a firm that wants job cards, timesheets, materials and job costing, with phone support on its Professional plan. It is priced per user.

Nexley suits an owner who is the bottleneck: it drafts quotes, files supplier bills against jobs and chases payments over WhatsApp, with you approving each step. It doesn't do client selections or a Gantt chart.

Is a long contract the real risk?

For a small builder, often yes. The cost of the wrong software is rarely the monthly fee. It's the training, the data you put in, and a year you can't get out of.

For example, a builder might sign a 12-month contract after one demo, pay for training and end up on the wrong package, when what he needed was cost per job, supplier bills into Xero and variations recorded as they happen.

The lesson for any software demo, Buildertrend included: write down the three jobs you need it to do, ask the salesperson to show each one with your own data, and don't sign a term longer than the trial has proved.

What should a UK builder choose?

Choose Buildertrend if client-facing project management is the gap and you have the time to set it up: you run several large domestic projects at once, clients expect a portal, and Xero already handles your VAT and CIS. Get the UK questions answered in writing first.

Choose Tradify or Fergus if you need quotes, jobs and invoices in one place on a monthly plan. Choose an AI back office if the work is fine and the paperwork around it is what's slowing you down. Plenty of firms run one of each.

Where Nexley fits

Nexley is the AI back office for UK trade firms: five AI assistants run your tenders, quotes, buying, scheduling and invoicing. It connects to the tools you already work in, you run it all from WhatsApp, and you approve everything. £799 a month.

Nexley works alongside your project software or instead of it. Send a voice note from site and it drafts the quote or the variation from your price list; forward a supplier bill and it files it against the job; ask on WhatsApp which jobs are making money and it tells you. You approve everything before it goes out. It runs month to month at £799, with a 7-day free trial.

Common questions

How is Nexley different from a job management app?

A job app is a better filing system: it holds your jobs, and you still do the quoting, invoicing and chasing. Nexley does that work. Five AI assistants draft your quotes, invoices, supplier orders, replies and tenders overnight from your own prices and your Xero, and you approve each one in WhatsApp. It's the office help you'd otherwise hire, for £799 a month against about £2,358 a month for a full-time admin.

Is Buildertrend available in the UK?

Yes. Its demo form lists the United Kingdom, and its FAQ says users are in more than 80 countries. Pricing is by quote, the form uses US dollars, and integrated payments are US only, so confirm VAT and currency in the demo.

Does Buildertrend handle CIS?

Its pricing and FAQ pages don't mention the Construction Industry Scheme. Most UK firms would run CIS through Xero or QuickBooks, which Buildertrend integrates with. Ask to see it working before you sign.

How much is Buildertrend a month?

Buildertrend doesn't publish prices. It quotes each business based on job volume, team size and scope, with 10% off for annual billing paid upfront.

What's the closest UK alternative to Buildertrend?

For client-facing project management with a portal, few UK-built trade tools match it closely. For quotes, jobs and invoices with UK pricing and monthly terms, Tradify and Fergus are the common choices.
